There is a lot of responsibility that comes along with owning a Yorkie. It's always smart to ask yourself if you are ready to raise one before you get one. Some people seem to think the only think you have to do is feed them and forget about them, but there is much more to it than that. As a Yorkie owner, it is your responsibility to keep them fed, groomed, healthy, and give them a suitable place to live. If you aren't prepared to do so, you shouldn't own a Yorkie.

One of your first priorities before bringing your Yorkie home, should be making it a safe environment for them to live in. This means making sure all chemicals, such as detergents, bug sprays, and cleaning products are all kept in an area your Yorkie will never be able to get to. In addition, you will also need to go through your house and look for anything that could possibly injure a small Yorkie. Check for exposed electrical wiring, sharp objects, and items that could possibly fall over on them.

After making sure you house is safe, you should start getting all the supplies ready for them. For starters, you will need to get some dog food for your Yorkie. When choosing a dog food, don't go for the cheapest brand. Instead, spend a couple bucks extra and get the premium food. It will not only be more enjoyable for them to eat, but it will also have a better nutritional value, making them look and feel healthier.

While your at the pet store, there a couple of extra items you should pick up. Food and water bowls are one of them. However, another item you will need to have is a crate. Try to find a crate that is just large enough for your pet Yorkie to stand up and walk around in. This will be plenty of room for them to be comfortable in, and it should help keep them from going to the bathroom inside it.

Some owners have old blankets they don't use anymore. If you don't have any, you will need to pick some up. You place the blankets out in your Yorkies bed to give them a soft and warm place to sleep. Remember, Yorkies don't have an undercoat, so they get much colder than other breeds do. This is why blankets are an important item for every owner to have.

If you want to own a Yorkie, there are many things you have to do first. But, if your willing to take on the responsibility of owning one, you will find the joy of a Yorkie is definitely worth it.
